The New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street, across from Times Square, was built and opened in 1902-1903, and is “The House Beautiful”; it is now a New York City landmark; it is the oldest operating theatre on Broadway; it was the site of the first showing of the movie The Jazz Singer starring Al Jolson (1927); and it is still renowned for its Art Deco interior.
The Aladdin set is amongst the most beautiful parts of the show: it has been designed by Bob Crowley, who has seven Tony Awards to his name and is a glittering exploitation of the Aladdin story and musical numbers that doesn’t detract from the action. The major musical number that sends Aladdin and Jasmine off in a whirl of magic carpet seems to stop time for 15 minutes every single night.
